I don't like change either... I also remember when neon lights were a novelty, I always seemed to be drawn towards them, which was the idea I suppose... these days everything is too much of the same, there's no excitement like there was back then. Such is life.

wonderful memories of mistrale club 1969 when i would go about 3 times a week. knew chris singleton, sue & sheila. lyn & cindy (good dancers) steve & liz. terry & andy and dave at the door and dj dave mitchell. where are they all now?loved the music i was 16 then met my 1st boyfriend there! remember junior walkers 'how sweet it is to be loved by you' played at 9pm to start the night and 'goodnight my love' ben e king to end the night. are there any re-union nights organised? i used to go to the bali hai in streatham on a sunday Jill, there's another thread on here relating to the Mistrale Club (formerly Beckenham Ballrooms) you might like to read. I also remember the Bali Hai in Streatham - our band (The Unattached) played there supporting The Mindbenders in 1966 - it was a revolving stage and we came on first and played their latest song (Groovey Kind Of Love) BEFORE they came on - they were not amused! ;D

Hi Appendix... sorry, no idea what your name was, but presumably you were in the band with Rob (Jacko) then? I was only speaking to him an hour ago, he's fine, are you in touch?
Re Linda... yes, I've tried to contact her via Rob's sister (Jackie) but to no avail, maybe I should try again. If anyone knows her, maybe they could mention I'm trying to get in touch. ;D

Yes, the iron fire escape does ring a bell; I'm sure it wasn't a pub anyway so I think we are both talking about the same place. Re the Bowiewonderworld site... Yes, I found that site, I think I mentioned that on the Wickham Goes Pop post though (must check, at the risk of getting boring!)... He (Dave!) has all his early gig dates there and our name (The Aces) is shown at the same gig, which was nice; not many people can say they played on the same bill as Sir Dave! Love the Bognor bit - been there, done that, but usually at Brighton or Southend... always seemed a good idea at the time, but come 4am when the sea mists came down it somehow lost it's apppeal! I can relate to the Victoria Station bit too, although my experience was at Charing Cross, having missed the last train home from an early initiation to Soho! Slept in a phone box, me in one and my mate next door... fine 'til we got woken up by the station Bobby and packed on our way... ended up walking home, it must have taken us hours, but who cares at that age.... timeline here 1965, The Kinks, Bob Dylan etc.. good days, when nothing else mattered! Re. Andy Bown of The Herd... Our band (by now, The Unattached) played support to them at The Drum in Penge (17th September 1966), and I recall my shock at Andy's make-up bag, eye liner, the lot.... I decided it probably best to look the other way and pretend I hadn't noticed... hard to believe he's with the Quo now! I remember Peter's girlfriend, later to become his wife if we are talking about the same one... we were at school together and I always remember being attracted to her myself (along with just about everyone else!)... seems the best man won. Ahhhh, Caters, I'd forgotten about them.. I worked at David Greig's in the Market Place! Good days, all good fun, just the bike and the girlfriend to worry about, in that order of course.

I shouldn't worry about it Nigel, it's possibly not even there now as I added it way back when the site first started up... it's probably long since been deleted, and best forgotten anyway, really.

An interesting account re. your "Mr Nutter" Nigel... I had my very own 'Mr Nutter' whilst at Hawes Down school, the result of which lead me to being transferred to Hayes school. As we're kind of off-topic here, the story is quite well documented and can be found on the Hawes Down memories page on Friendsreunited if you're interested. Such a shame we had to endure 'people' like this as they certainly left their mark, but hey, we got through it; maybe if there was more discipline these days we wouldn't be in the situation we are in, but I will never be convinced the tactics of these ******** worked in any positive way, and I like to think they would never get away with it in another lifetime. They were certainly not the best days of my life, that's for sure.

Some good stuff there re. the nightclub Nigel, although I can't elaborate on that further I'm afraid. I can't help with Carol either, unfortunately... I've got a few of those myself though, we must share some notes! ;D
Coincidentally, you have brought up another name 'lost in time' and something else you might be able to clear up for me... You mention The Penthouse at Bromley South.... I went to a place down the side of the station (in 1965, I think) and saw Lulu and The Lovers - I remember to this day standing (underage) at the very front of the stage drooling over Lulu... do you think this could have been The Penthouse? My mate who came with me reckoned it was in a place over a pub, but I'm not so sure, I don't seem to recall a pub down there. Thanks.

ROBERTSONS was the name of the shop, of course, it comes back to me as if yesterday, thanks Nigel! That's a great interview with Peter Frampton, I enjoyed it and have bookmarked it to read in it's entirety. The Strangers - yes, you're right again. Pete Sears would have been the bass player, later with Starship etc; there are various biographies on the net about him confirming all this so no point in adding links. Terry Brown - I have just rechecked the Friendsreunited link you noted and this in fact confirms it was Terry, so well done there too! This source also confirms the drummer to be Michael Corbet. Susan Dibley's brother on vocals - I'm not sure on that one, I don't even remember Susan so can't comment on that at all, but we're getting there! Joy.. Peter wasn't very tall and we used to jam in the front room of our guitarist's house, Martin Knell in 1962/63. Martin was an excellent guitarist himself, and I can confirm he still is as I 're-found' him a few years ago after some 40 odd years! Both Peter and Martin were huge influences on my playing at the time and I remember the days well; I sometimes wonder if Peter would remember them with such affection, if at all I suppose as minor memories like that tend to fade when you've lead a life like his. I have tried to get in touch over the years but to no avail, which I find a bit sad as we were all 'nobodys' at one point. Such is life...

Hi Nigel, sorry for the slow response, we're trying to sell the house up here in sunny Lincolnshire in a desperate attempt to return to civilisation and I just don't know where the time goes. Another great reply, thanks once again for the input. Ok, firstly... just to confirm dates to places... The Wickham Common School gig The Aces played was the one on the 25th July 1963. The Wickham Goes Pop gigs (2) were at Wickham Halls, Sussex Road, off Wickham High Street; these were in October and November 1963. UPDATE: I can now confirm the second (November) Wickham Goes Pop show was in fact at The Assembly Rooms, Gates Green Road, Coney Hall, and NOT at Wickham Halls as I stated above. See also my update in a later post below - complete with poster! The gig you refer to some 30 yards into gates Green Rd from Croydon Road was the Assembly Rooms, and there were several put on there, some definitely involved The Trubeats, but unfortunately I can't put dates to these. Re Terry Nicholson... Yes, he was in my class at Hayes and I remember him well.. he went out with the girl of my dreams (everybody in the school's dreams I think! ) - Wendy Nichols, and I believe he married her; I'd like to know where they are now as it would be interesting to talk about our early band experiences. Speaking of which.. I wonder if Peter (Frampton) ever spots stuff like this in Forums such as this??? Wouldn't it be a treat to find a response by him one day!!! Re the Crabapple wars... I remember them well!!! ;D Thanks again for the memories. Pete

Hi Nigel, what a great response, thanks for the input! What's most interesting, is that you mention the gig at the school hall on Gates Green Road (Wickham Common Junior School).... I can confirm that was the 25th July 1963, and that is was my group (The ACES) that played! Were you there??? If so, that's amazing as i have never heard from one person who was! Regarding the Richard Chamberlain thing.... I do know one of The Truebeats was Alan Chamberlain, so I imagine it was his father you are referring to, although I have no knowledge of the connection to the actor Richard Chamberlain. Interesting none-the-less, as I wasn't aware of that promotional move! I do recall Peter's father wanting him to get a 'proper job', though a tad ironic now as he went on to fare far better than he might have in any so-called 'proper job'! Good for him, I always knew he would become a star. Re David on sax.... yes, that was a very significant moment in my (soon to be) musical career, and I can relate to your having similar thoughts... he really stood out from the rest, he really was "what it was all about"! Just out of interest Nigel.... did you ever live on Hartfield Crescent, opposite Wickham Common School? Thanks again, please add anything else you can recall. Pete

Hi Joy. Thanks for the reply. There were several halls supporting band gigs in the Wickham area at the time, such as Justin Hall, Wickham Halls, Coney Hall Assembly Rooms... Shirley apparently had one too as I just found a Konrads gig with the Trubeats. If you want to read more on the Wickham Goes Pop gigs, see my post in the Memories section of this forum.
Re Ian Roffey.... wasn't he in a band called The Strangers? They used to play at Hayes School in 1962/63. Pete Frampton was with the Trubeats of course. Keep 'em coming! Pete

Hi Pete53 and Joy. Pete... Re. the Denny Mitchell gig at The Assembly Rooms in Coney Hall... can you remember if their's was the only band on the night, or were there several bands playing? I'm trying to piece together my own band's movements around late 1963 / early 1964, and I am told my own band (The Aces) played at the Assembly Rooms at some point, but I don't have record of this in my diary. I do know we did the two Wickham Goes Pop! gigs at Wickham Halls, but can't find anything to confirm the Assembly Rooms gig at all. A long shot, but thought I'd ask! Thanks, Pete CORRECTION! I can now confirm the second Wickham Goes Pop show was at The Assembly Rooms, Coney Hall, NOT at Wickham Halls as I at first stated above.Joy.... did you go to Hayes school in 1963 then?

Anyone any recollections of Cinemas that have long since gone?
Bromley The Pullman (later The Astor) - opposite what used to be The Odeon and known as The Flea Pit! It was very small, sort of 'wedge' shaped inside and at an angle to the pavement, so easily recogniseable today as the Taste Buffet.
The Gaumont - Bromley South, now Habitat.
Hayes, Station Approach - The Rex, now Iceland.
West Wickham, Station Road - The Plaza/Odeon/Gaumont. This was next to the Post Office and replaced by Boots. I originally had this down as The Gaumont but since learned it was originally The Plaza, The Odeon, and lastly The Gaumont.
Coney Hall - on the corner of Kingsway/Croydon Road. Actually, whilst this looks distinctly like it was once a Cinema (and indeed, it was intended to be), this 1930s Art Deco inspired building never achieved it's status and was eventually opened as a restaraunt and dance hall! Later it became a garage, selling petrol and cars, with the upstairs turned into offices of the Danish Bacon Company. Sadly, these days it's just another Wickes store.
All my 'present day' references are obviously subject to change.

I stumbled upon this site by accident this morning and just had to post it on here as it seems it hasn't been spotted yet. Beckenham School of Art: www.beckenhamschoolart.orgSome interesting history and many great photos, with even more faces... someone must surely spot themselves in here! My father went there in the 1920s.

Eden Park: Cooter & Green Ltd, Upper Elmers End Road - it was one of the first JET stations I believe, I used to pull petrol there in 1966 when petrol was 4/7d a gallon!
Coney Hall: Somewhat off-patch, but there was one on the present site of FOCUS. I can remember going there with my father in his 1934 Ford and getting "half of Pool". I was led to believe 'Pool' was the dregs of everything else, but I'm not sure.. it was just the cheapest! I still have the car, by the way. ;D
Hope these are of interest.
