Hi Joy... at a guess this was probably Denny Mitchell and his 1964 single, "I've Been Crying". I can't recall another local muso called Denny, though I could be wrong.

Thanks for the info again Chris and Historian, funny how time plays tricks on the memory; it seems Gerrards was the other side of the passage to how I remember it. As for the music shop.... the H&B shop front fits perfectly as I recall standing just inside the doorway looking in the side window, so spot on there I reckon. I'm not sure I ever went inside so, unfortunately, I can't elaborate further on the shop.

Hi. Does anyone remember Gerrards, the greengrocers, on Beckenham High Street during the 1960s? This is of no real importance, I would just like someone to be able to confirm it was where the Cancer Research shop currently resides, next door to the Slug and Lettuce pub, adjacent to the alleyway? I worked there for a very short while, possibly around Christmas 1966.
Also, there used to be a music shop on the High Street - no, not Normans on the corner of Village Way, but almost oppposite, right on the bend. This may not actually have been a dedicated music shop (as was Normans), but I do recall drooling over a spanking new red Fender Stratocaster in the window for £125, totally out of my reach! I would just like to know the name of the shop if possible. Thanks. Pete
UPDATE: I have, at last, found an old photo showing the location of GERRARD'S. The present day numbering shows it as 162 High Street, Beckenham, and clearly to the LEFT of the passage, not to the right as my memory would have me believe. It's nice that this also confirms Chrisdoran and Historian's research as correct.
Also, as I'm currently updating this post.... the music shop I asked about is now confirmed as Robertsons - thanks to Nigel for that. Pete

Hi Chrisdoran and Historian; sorry for the late reply, I've been somewhat tied up and haven't had time to look back in.
Thanks for the info Chris, you have worked hard and it sounds highly likely this could be our Brenda, with my father just being an "uncle", as you say! Interestingly, the Fisks are shown as living at 137 Blandford Rd at the 1911 census, and they were also there (apparently) in 1918 when Vernon was born, so, as I only recall my father mentioning 135 I think they must have moved sometime between 1918 and 1935 when the Potters moved into 137.
My father (Marcus Fisk) left Blandford Rd in 1938 and moved to Coney Hall, West Wickham - his parents (Cyrus and Amy Fisk) became ill shortly after and went to stay with him at West Wickham in 1939, so if this is our Brenda I can only assume Dad knew her when she was first born and used to go back to Blandford Rd to visit the Potters.
Just one more point... I was also of the opinion the Fisks lived in the 'top flat' (135), so a bit of confusion there, but of course, irrelevant to Brenda as such.
The Fisk children at the address were: Amy Doris, Claude, Edna, Marcus, Donald and Vernon. (Donald was born there in 1910 but died in 1913).
So, thanks very much for this info, I'll see if I can dig around with the Potter/Brett names and let you know what I find. Pete

Hi. Can anyone identify this little girl called Brenda, age 2, from the 1930s I believe? It was taken by Potter's photographers, 125 Oakfield Road, Penge, and is in the form of a postcard. Please open the link below: s853.photobucket.com/albums/ab93/PeteFisk/?action=view¤t=Brenda.jpgThe inscription on the back reads: "To Uncle Marc, from Brenda, age 2". Uncle Marc was my father, Marcus FISK who lived at 135 Blandford Road, Beckenham between 1910 and 1938, but he had no known neices of that name so the photo is a bit of a mystery. So, quite simply - does anyone know of a Brenda living (or lived) in the Beckenham/Penge area, possibly in their 70's now? Thanks, Pete

Hi Historian. I'm still not sure if the Rolls was there in 1966 when we played there - have you any idea, or was it a later edition? I wish I had the actual date we played, but unfortunately not - it could even have been 1965. Pete The lady in the Rolls was married to Mike the owner, she was tall with long blond hair. I am told that they moved to Australia in the late 80s or early 90s.

Hey, I already AM OLD!!! ;D Were you actually there on the night? Let us know what you can remember! I don't remember much about our gig, musically, only that we played the opening set and the first number being Sh-La-La-La-Le by the Small Faces... I can remember being determined to play the first musical note ever played at the club, which I did with the opening riff of that song! We only played covers so it was good to see Pete Frampton up there with his own songs... I always knew he'd become a star. I also recall being mused at Andy Bown's makeup case, something I wasn't used to and beat a hasty retreat from the dressing room! Of course, this was to become the norm in the so-called 'big time' music industry, so he must've been kool after all - he must have been as he's still going strong with the Quo, after all these years! Good on him.

The original poster of the opening night of The Drum, Parish Lane, Penge on the 17th September 1966. It shows our band, The Unattached supporting The Herd. I also have a couple of photos, possibly taken at this gig, so will post them at a later date. Attachments:

Hi. Does anyone recall a band from Beckenham/Penge called The Modernists? They were actually called 'Al And His Modernists', but were probably known as the former, for quickness.
I have no idea who Al was, but my uncle Vernon Fisk (then of 135 Blandford Rd) used to play the sax and clarinet.
My Dad used to transport the band around in his Ford 8 car, with the big bass drum strappped on the rear carrier with the spare wheel - this would have been around 1938/39; I still have the car to this day, though sadly the former band members have probably all since passed on.
Any info on this would be most welcome, no matter how insignificant it may seem. Thanks, Pete

No idea where this is, but could a major clue be with the predominantly female staff? There can't have been that many factories around at the time with such a large female base. Pete

Hi again Historian. Just thought I'd ask this one again, as, try as I will I haven't been able to find the photo of Stone Park Hospital! The link you gave me (above) only seems to go up to 83, and when I try the following pages I still can't get to 98! Thanks, Pete
