Hi Boogieknight, thanks for the additions.... Strangely, I just cannot recall the lady in the Rolls Royce, maybe this was a later addition, after our gigs in 1966? It's such a long time ago and the memory plays tricks, but it would be nice to know... perhaps someone can confirm this either way? Pete

Hi rzan. Yes, you could be right there... for some reason I only ever knew it as the Fiesta - I think that may have been it's name some years before, and I was introduced to it as such and it just stuck! I doubt many will remember this, but our group played in there one evening - we were called The Misfits and were due to play somewhere else but were cancelled, so poor old Maurice got an unscheduled (and free!) gig for a few cups of his famous watered down tea... I can't imagine where we put all the gear but we must have got it all in somewhere! ;D Re. names: The Misfits were... Pete Fisk (guitar), Dave Streeter (vocals), Lenny Coward (guitar), Terry Williams (drums) and a bass player whose name escapes me. Funnily enough, we must have all been about 16 at the time and old Maurice seemed ancient to us (bless him!), but now one of my best mates looks just like him!

Hi Historian. Thanks for that, but I'm having difficulty in grabbing the menus in galleries long enough to locate the Langley and Kelsey page - I'm assuming it is in Gallery 1 as that is part of the address - am I doing something wrong? Pete

Yes, that's right, Cooter & Green's place was more Eden Park than Elmers End, just before Village Way. I'd forgotten about the dress shop next door to Fiveash, and yes, it was run by his wife.... funny how one thing leads to another! Hmmm.. on reading your reply I now see you mention it as a Dress 'Agency'; maybe my memory is playing tricks, or perhaps they are two of the same? Not to worry, it's Cooter & Green that was my main point.

Ha! Yes, it sure is a small world. I think it might have been me that put Rob in touch with you from your original post regarding the Appendix band, I'll have to look back at your earlier posts though to confirm that but it was either on here or the VN site. We're in touch all the time now, which is nice, especially after 40 years, though he took a bit of finding - it turned out he lived just 50 miles from where I was living and had been doing for some 20 years, albeit some 150 miles north of Penge! Great article re the gig anyway, keep up the good work! Pete PS.. sorry to crash your thread, Chelseagirl.

Hi. Does anyone know if there are any photographs of the old Stone Park Hospital? I was born there but have no idea what it looked like.
Thanks, Pete

Just another daft reminisce... 1967, The Fiesta Cafe on top of Clock House Bridge, drinking cups of old Maurice's watered down tea whilst playing at being the original Pinball Wizard and listening to Procol Harum's - Whiter Shade Of Pale and The Shangrilas - Leader Of The Pack on the jukebox. I can still recall the distinctive smell of Castrol R as my mate would thrash up and down outside on his beat-up old BSA Bantam, trying to look cool and take-off on the hump of the bridge, flat out at around 29 MPH... needlessly to say, he never quite managed it! Then Lofty would burble up on his Goldie (BSA Gold Star), cool as ya like and make us all look invisible, thrashing around like pseudo-Rockers, paper clips in our leather jackets for studs, my mate age 16 on his Bantam and me age 17 on me old Tiger Cub!!! "Coffee-bar Cowboys" I believe they called us! I dunno, the good old days, where did it all go?

Hi Historian and Sandy, sorry for the late response but this is the first time I've been able to get back on here for ages.
Yes, I think you are right with the name of The Mistrel Club (as a further update I can now confirm it to have been The Mistral Club (with an 'a')). I'm not sure where I got the 'Hawaii' bit, but I think I was getting confused with the upstairs bar at Streatham Ice Rink, another band gig of the day and I think that may have been called the Blue Hawaii.
As for the Rolls Royce, I think can vaguely remember that but daren't be too possitive on that, that may have come after we played there. Anyway, thanks again for the help, keep up the good work with the site, it's great to see the old stuff emerging. Pete

Hi. Does anyone remember Cooter & Green, the JET petrol filling station on Upper Elmers End Road back in 1966-67? I used to serve petrol there, one particular memory is serving Alan Clarke of The Hollies in his Rolls Royce; frustratingly, at the time not grasping who it was until my mate put me straight after he'd gone! Anyway, he left me a handsome tip of 1/6d and I kept the empty can for ages - OK, years! ;D
I've lived away from the area for many years, so does anyone know when it ceased to be called Cooter & Green? Last time I passed by it was a car sales place.
Also, just up the road there used to be Fiveash's motorcycle MOT place, though I suspect that is long gone. Thanks, Pete

Hi Chelseagirl. Yes, I remember The Drum, our band The Unattached played the opening night on 17th September 1966 supporting Peter Frampton's new band, The Herd! If you look a bit earlier in the Memories posts you'll find a couple of more of mine, I think I will have mentioned this in one of those.
As for names... our band for a start was Robert Jackson on drums, John Berry on vocals and rhythm guitar, Bill ****** (sorry, I forget his surname) or Barry Collins on bass guitar, and myself Pete Fisk on lead guitar. We played mostly the current Pop stuff of the time, Beatles, Stones, The Who, Kinks, Small Faces etc.
I have some photos taken on that very night if you would like to see them, one shows some of the audience so you may recognise someone, even yourself if you were there, though this may have been before your time! I do remember one girl in particular as she threw me a 'Gonk', of which I still have to this day - I think her name was Linda Tiles so it would be nice to know if she is still around. Another band around at the time were The Villains but beyond that names of people in general escape, it was a very long time ago!
Anyway, I hope that is of interest to you. Pete :-)

Hi. Can anyone remember the name of the nightclub that stood adjacent to Beckenham Junction station around 1966? I have a feeling it might have been called The Blue Hawaii but am not sure. With thanks, Pete Fisk

Hi Aaron. I used to visit number 5 D.y.k.e.s Way back in 1964 and they were still houses then, though I believe they were built to, what was to be deemed in later years as 'sub-standard' and not suitable for re-mortgage. I could be slightly wrong on the detail here as it is only what I heard, but I do know they were subsequently demolished and the ones there today erected in their place.
The road was in a T form with number 5 being round to the left at the top, almost in the left hand corner, possibly one from the end.
I hope this helps and feel free to email me if you would like to know more. Pete

Hi. Does anyone remember a local Pop group around 1966 named The Unattached? We played a new kind of 'Nightclub' at Beckenham Junction around the time - thanks to forum readers we now know this to have been The Mistral Club. We also played the local Youth Clubs around Beckenham and Penge; one was Trinity Youth Club on Lennard Road, and another was The Drum. The Drum was a brand new Club on Parish Lane, Penge which we opened on 17th September 1966, supporting The Herd. I still have the original poster and will see if I can attach it to this post later. It shows admission price of 5/- for members and 5/6d for visitors! There were a couple of other Youth Clubs that spring to mind.... one was The Acorn Youth Club on Martins Road, Shortlands, next to a chip shop (I think), behind Shortlands station. Another was on Church Road, Bromley, near the entrance to Martins Hill (now a housing area). They used to have bands playing there, with one called The Skutch 4... does anyone remember them? Another club, slightly out of the area was The Short Circuit on Downham Way with a favourite visiting band named The In-formation, who were known for their psychedelic light show, quite something for the day! The Misfits (1964) apparently played a spontaneous gig at the old Fiesta Cafe (54 Cafe) on Clock House Bridge when their original gig was cancelled.... I'll never forget old Maurice's tea!!! This was followed by a fully paid gig for SEM's at a Working Man's Club in Sidney Road, just alongside Clock House Station... we only had 5 songs and played them over and over again.... you wouldn't get away with that today! ;D We used to rehearse at the old Leather Tannery at Elmers End with everyone plugged into one small guitar amplifier (including the singer) - rumour has it, it used to pick up Coronation Street at the same time! Good days... Pete

Hi. Does anyone remember the Wickham Goes POP! concert at Wickham Halls, Sussex Road, West Wickham in 1963? The night consisted of a variety of local bands, including my own, The Aces, but with the notable exception of one particular band going on to become slightly more famous than the rest - a certain Davy Jones and his band The Konrads, soon to become David Bowie! Ok, many of you will already know this, and that Peter Frampton was there also with his band The Trubeats; but for me, personally, whilst I already knew Peter was there I only learned David Bowie was part of The Konrads in recent years after watching a Bowie documentry on TV!!! Anyway, the purpose of this post is - as the youngest band we were one of the first to appear so got to sit back and watch the 'bigger boys' perform from an audience perspective... it was while doing this, and I can remember the 'feeling' to this day, watching this tall thin bloke on the sax and thinking... "That's what I wanna be when I grow up"..... . I had no idea who he was, he was just one of the band members, but for some reason he stood out; I have no idea why but the memory has stayed with me and it wasn't until I saw the documentry that I put two and two together and realised just who that tall thin guy was, or was to become! Ok, I never got to be a rock star like Sir Dave, but I did get to make my living from music from that day to this, so I guess my ambition was fulfilled in part, if not all! Over the years I often wondered if anyone ever took any photos that night.... then, on browsing a certain Reunited site I spotted our old bass player who I hadn't seen since the time. He promptly sent me the photograph I'd always wanted, that of our little band, taken by his Mum on that very stage, that very night! I then did a web search of "Wickham Goes POP" and found David Bowie had actually mentioned the gig in his gig history.. he didn't have the exact date so I contacted the site and passed it on, 24th October 1963. www.bowiewonderworld.com/press/60/63wickham.htmIt was nice to see our name (The Aces) mentioned on his site, it felt quite a buzz realising I had actually 'supported' the one and only David Bowie, and at my first ever gig, him albeit Davy Jones at the time! Hey, that's still kinda kool! I then, did another search and found an auction of some old Bowie memorabilia, this including some old photographs - one taken on the very same stage on the very same night, the only difference being The Konrads had their own backdrops and props standing around. There were actually two gigs, a "Wickham Goes POP 2" in the November '63 and I believe this was the second (this one also shown on David's gig list for 1963) but it was mostly the same bands that played. Everything on the stage was identical which was nice as it just confirmed what we had read. Sadly, just weeks ago I learned that Wickham Halls had burnt down, or at least the roof and interior were badly damaged... I had intended ringing them to ask if I could take a look round back stage etc, but as usual these days I put it off to another day, a day too long in this case, unfortunately. Oh well, that's it, I hope someone will find this interesting or maybe even remember the gig? Pete (still Rockin' after all these years!) ;D
