Hi. Can anyone remember the name of the nightclub that stood adjacent to Beckenham Junction station around 1966? I have a feeling it might have been called The Blue Hawaii but am not sure. With thanks, Pete Fisk A wealth of information here. It was the Mistrale ad here are some flyers with 1968 dates of gigs. Prior to 1968 it was the Beckenham Ballroom

My brother and I (Stephen and Peter Gulson) came to the Beckenham at ages 10 and 8 respectively having relocating with our parents from Sydney Australia when my father took a Government posting in London in 1964. We initially lived in Copers Cope Road and then in Eden Way Eden Park and have lots of great memories growing up there. When we went back to Sydney my brother and I lost all contact with our friends. With both of us in our 60's and retired we are looking to relive those memories with those who may have known us and were friends like Stephen Bielby. Phillip Web or Anthony Rickets. We went to Marian Vian Primary School from 1964 and 1967 and my brother Stephen went on to Hawes Down High School. If any has memories of us please make contact. I remember Stephen and Dale Bielby, sadly Dale passed away a few years ago, his parents were still living in the same house 10 years ago. Phill Webb I believe had a younger brother, lived in Lloyds Way. The name Rickets rings a bell. Do you remember Paul Whale, Paul Faires, Rick and Ray Lotto. I also went to Marian Vian and Hawes Down, my name is Ian Muir.

Mr Father, Sid Ford was the assistant superintendent until about 1975 and Mr Alec Nicholls was my uncle. Our family lived in a flat above the baths. It was a fascinating time, the swimming wrestling, dancing, dog shows and bird shows too. When I visited a few years ago, the whole of the lovely original building had gone but library and school untouched, it was a weird feeling and a tremendous sense of loss. There are some photos of the baths on the main site in the Clock House albums www.beckenhamhistory.co.uk/flashNifties/gallery2.html

Hi Ian, as part of our research into Beckenham Place Park and surrounds, we've found information not in the main content of your site or contradicting some earlier assumptions. I know its a labour of love and as Rob Copeland and Robert Borrowman said, we are at the mercy of available information. However, do you have a mechanism for receiving and updating information. We have several images from maps in the British Library and information drawn from them. Rob Copeland must have seen them as a copy of one is in Bromley Local studies but in monochrome photo form. We have reproduced some extracts on our beckenhamplaceparkfriends.org.uk website but there are some images of the Burrell estates of Langley Park, Eden Park etc of 1780. The maps and other material make it possible to take some of your entries back a bit further. One page mentions a 1623 map which I believe to be the Beckenham Manor map redrawn in about 1770. The landowners like Style, Bolingbroke, Burrell's, Raymonds, Cators all interacted and exchanged property. Hasted's history of Kent illustrates a lot of the chain of ownership but is not in itself error or misprint free and has one of the mistaken dates for the building of Beckenham Place in my opinion. I'm happy to share the material we have as its 'public domain' and in the interest of detail and accuracy. As I manage our website I'm aware of how compex webdesign can be but also can be quite simple in some respects. I applaud your endeavors to digitize Beckenham History and would hopefully be aiding and adding to the overall picture. Best wishes, Mal. Send me a message via the contact page on the site please.

I was born in 1938 and lived at 76 Orchard Avenue, Shirley. I went to early school at 'Holly Lodge' primary that I think I remember as an old Victorian Building. Often my mother would walk with me but on a few occasions I rode my 'Fairy Cycle' on my own as she thought I knew the way well enough. I did know the way but not the rules of the road and very nearly got killed as I emerged into the (Penge? Rd.) at full speed neither looking left nor right. It so frightened a car driver that he stopped and made his way back to the school where he gave me a dressing down in front of the school. I went on to Whitgift School South Croydon and at 18/19 took a gap year at a Beckenham firm called Muirhead, no longer there as it was taken over by GEC. Whilst there I worked in the Facsimile Laboratory under chief engineer Peter Sieber (Muirhead invented the facsimile machine and the CEO, Ray Brown, was the first to use it in his office.) Recently, i took my grandson to the Science Museum and there on the main floor was the very machine on display in a glass case as a historical piece of technology (I earned a patent on a bit of tech inside it.) I knew then that I was very old. PCM Thanks for that.God Bless. paduard I believe Holly Lodge School became Eden Park School. It was demolished a few years ago and is now houses. There are some photos of the demolition in the photo gallery. Look for the Eden Park album.http://www.beckenhamhistory.co.uk/flashNifties/gallery1.html

Bumping this old topic back up... I'm sure there was a cinema near the green at Elmers End - the end building of the crescent shaped parade of shops. My mum took me to see a Danny Kaye film there during the day in about 1954. How decadent. Yes there was a cinema there. It was demolished by a local company called Frank Valori.

Hi Pete Trawling through the mounds of stuff that accumulates over the years, I happened upon 3 small B&W prints from the Clock House Cafe featuring various Herberts of the Parish! Not sure about posting pics of identifiable individuals on forums - I'm sure there are rules in this day and age about such things. Any way they are scanned and ready to go once directions are received from the Mod. Best wishes Feel free to post. Admin

I was very interested to see the comments about Wickham Goes Pop. Actually Peter Frampton had left the Trubeats by then. My father was the one who organised the Richard Chamberlain visit which was at the Church Hall in the Avenue where the 44th Beckenham Scout Troup met. Chamberlain had family living in Langley Park and my father managed to persuade him to make an appearance. Terry Nicholson did not marry Wendy Nicholls and not sure what happened to her, but I do have many photos of the dances if anyone is interested. Terry was my older brother but he sadly died in 2004. The Trubeats were Terry Nicholson/Bass and Vocals - Dave Roffey/Guitar and Alan Chamberlain(no relation) Drums. Peter Frampton went on to the Preachers and then The Herd, I am still in touch with him today. oh by the way I think David Myers (lived in the Avenue and worked for Tree Top Drinks) was one of the organisers of these big gigs. Would love to hear from Chrisjeepman/Pete or Nigel or anyone. Hi, I'm very interested in any photo that you have. Contact the main site then I will email you with my email. Is the Richard Chaimberlain the actor who played Dr Kildare? Admin.
