Beckenham Speakers Club The Association of Speakers Clubs, Beckenham Speakers Clubs parent body has delivered an invitation to all of its affiliate clubs to enter its Virtual Speech Contest. This is a really interesting concept in that the Associations membership spans the length and breadth of England, Wales and Scotland. By recording speeches and posting them to the web, speeches can be judged from the living room. Therefore, no special meeting, no travel and no expense. Beckenham has chipped in with six speeches recorded live at a meeting on the 19th February 2009. Well have to wait until May for the results but it is a novel method of promoting the club and effective speaking skills.

The 109 bus from Penge. Any one know the route this bus would have taken, I believe it was the fore-runner to the 227. The reason I ask is because I have an image of the 109 outside what looks like a pub. At first I thought it may be The Alexandra but it is not. See image here www.beckenhamhistory.co.uk/Number109.jpg

I suggest that you phone Beckenham Cemetery or write to see if they can find out who was responsible for the grave(s) if there is one. If the couple was elderly, have you looked in the 1911 census? Do you know where they lived?

There are two ways you can do this providing you can get to Beckenham or Bromley Library.
It will all be in the Beckenham Journal. Cllr Boyd Boyd was Mayor from Nov 1947 to May 1959 so the elections should be in Nov 1947 and then in May from 1949 onwards. The newspapers are on microfilm at Bromley library and in large books at Beckenham library up the stairs from the reference section.
There are also the Beckenham minutes that list all the councillors and what they served on. They are on the open shelves at Bromley library in the right hand corner of local studies floor. This would be the best bet!

Pete,
The shop was called The Eden Dress Agency.
I think they had a daughter who went to Langley School.
The owner or manager of Cooter and Green lived next door to the garage. The garage today is part of The Masters Group and sell mainly Mitsubishi cars and 4 wheel drives.

Pete,
just leave your mouse in the corner and the menu will stay there. You do not have to grab it when it comes down, it does so to indicate that it is there. You will get used to it.

Pete,
I seem to remember Cooter and Green being near Eden Park end of Upper Elmers End Rd. I dont know when it changed hands.
Fiveash was still around in the 80s and now is a Cafe. His wife ran the Eden Dress Agency a few doors away and is now a bridal shop.
