Hi, I live in Brockley and have dug up an old bottle on a railway cutting. It has 'Pence and W.J Herbert, Beckenham' on it. I'm just curious about it's age and the type of bottle/drink. If anyone has any info that would be useful. Thanks Anna-Maria Untitled 5.pdf (29.44 KB)

It would be manufactured between late 1800s to c1930.

hi annamaria, what a coincidence, I have deleted a photo and had googled to find it again when up popped your query! William Herbert was my father's uncle and ran a dairy in Beckenham/Penge in the 30s and 40s (not sure when he finished). my father remembers visiting the bottling room as a boy (he's 91 next month) and being amazed by all the bottles whirling around and getting filled with milk. He says he made 'a fortune' from supplying schools with milk. I have recently bought a large bottle - 2 pints/quart? - and have been looking for a small one.

If you follow this link on the main site and from the menu on the left there is a photo of Herberts Dairy FC.http://www.beckenhamhistory.co.uk/flashNifties/gallery5.html
