Hi folks,
I'm disappointed to see that Bromley have given planning permission to pull down The Rising Sun in Upper Elmers End Road. I spent many enjoyable evenings in there doing the quiz even if the ale wasn't the best kept. The plan is to build a three story structure with some sort of supermarket on the ground floor (like we need another supermarket there) and flats above. I think the council committee had initially rejected the proposal on the basis of their own community rules but as is always the way with Bromley council it seems that if a plan involves new housing then it eventually gets through. It will be a shame to see the old girl go and will soon be no more than a memory like so many of the distinctive landmarks in the area, it was ripe for someone to turn it into a proper ale pub and hub of the local community.
On a more positive note though, The William IV makeover appears to have been a success.

Shame that the old place has gone. I went to the same school as the landlords son. Sometimes he would get a lift from his Dad and he would stop his car at the bus stop opposite and those of us waiting for the 194 bus would all pile in and get a free lift to Hawes Down. I think the lad's name was Derek Tabbard and his dad drove a Ford Zodiac which was quite a flash car in the early 60's.

Remember it well - I also went to school with the landlord's son - from (hazy) memory his name was Eddie (Edwin) Tabbard.
