Hello everybody.
This is a quick question from someone who is not from the Beckenham area. I'm currently doing research on Woodford RFC and, as Beckenham were regular opponents of the club in the 20s and 30s, I'd like to know where in Beckenham I could access local papers from the pre-war era.
Also, which paper was the best one for Beckenham RFC reports in the pre-war years?
Many thanks.

Hi, If you go upstairs in the reference section of Beckenham Library in Beckenham Road and turn right you will find some large bound journals containing the Beckenham and Penge Advertiser/Beckenham Journal. These newspapers go back to the 1800s. They have not got every paper, some years are missing. At Bromley Central Library they have all the old newspapers on micro film and you can print or scan them. www.bromley.gov.uk/directory_record/34387/central_library

For the record, the newspaper collection at Beckenham Library covers:-
1876-1880 Beckenham Journal, A5-ish bound volumes in the glass cabinets which will be unlocked on request at the counter downstairs.
1892-1914 Beckenham Journal Annual which in most years had a day-by-day summary of selected events during the year. In the same glass cabinets.
1936 A very few issues of the Beckenham Journal in a folder on open shelves.
1941-1978 bound volumes of the Beckenham Journal on open shelves.
1999-current News Shopper, unbound in unlocked cupboards.
1989-current Kentish Times/Bromley Times, unbound in unlocked cupboards.
The sets are all incomplete, from odd issues to whole years missing.
For a more comprehensive collection, you need to use the microfilm at Bromley.
