I used to DJ at the Three Tuns around 1968. We played Ska, Rock steady, reggae (which was just out) and of course plenty of Soul and Tamla. On the Ska records we did "Toasting" or as we called it "Chanting" to liven them up. Plenty of chants such as "hup now" "Chukka chukka chukka" and "Wop now" filled the back room of The Three Tuns pub. I think we charged 3/- to attend but mostly it was just to earn enough to buy new records. Nobody ever got rich from DJ'ing in the 60's. Bit different today with DJ Tiesto and his private plane.

I used to love the Ska and Reggae, I pretended to take the dog for a walk and tied him up at the back of the pub but my dad used to cycle past after his evening class and recognised the bark, I was once very unceremoniously removed by the scruff of my neck right in the middle of Red, Red Wine!!

I used to live near Pete Gosling in Goddard Road. Great pianist and organist but had a blood disease. Spent many a night there with my girlfriend then, last name was Beckett. We saw lots of bands there but cannot remember their names. Anyone got a band list for 1967 era?

I played keyboards wiith Denny Mitchell after Pete left (I think due to ill health). Before that I played with The Copains with Brain Balcombe on guitar. The Preachers were the best group around and when their guitar player died they auditioned at Justin Hall for a new replacement. I was there and started talking to one of the hopeful audition candidates. He was telling me about Arthur Big Boy Cruddup and Milk Cow Blues. I didn't know what he was talking about. He failed the audition because Peter Frampton got the gig. His name was Jeff Beck. The Preachers morphed into an awful pop group renamed The Herd and passed into relative obscurity. Peter went on to Stardom and jeff Beck is still breaking down musical barriers as one of the great guitar players of our time. Fond memories. :-)

Wonderful skinhead days.

I remember Peter Frampton joining The Preachers as I remember him leaving The Trubeats and wanting the job myself, but this is a great twist. I also remember seeing Denny Mitchel and the Soundsations, so I will have seen you play... good days, so long ago though now, where did the time go?

I recall it a little later, 1974/5 with r&r played to retro teds and bikers with mixed emotions shared in teh car park. I played for the darts team for a while back then and the best player often slept rough or sofa surfed.

Dave, did you play 'Good night my love' and the end of the evening and do you remember Billy Frost ? This tune was the last one played at the King Alfred every Thursday night; what nights they were. I met my husband in the Three Tuns. I also met Peter Gosling, lovely guy. I remember when they sung 'The house of the rising sun', at the Justin Halls, Peter played the organ so brilliant then. Do hope he is well. Also went to the Penthouse in Bromley straight from the Tuns on a Saturday. Oh to go back for a week or two and have the energy!
