I am looking for anyone who remembers...On 2nd August 1944 at 13.02 when a Flying bomb hit a restaurant crowded with people lunching. It stood in the Clockhouse area of Beckenham, just South of the railway bridge that carries the Beckenham to Crystal Palace railway line and Tramlink. The restaurant was on the West side of the road. 44 people were killed, many instantly and many badly injured. As well as the restaurant huge destruction was caused to the shops and houses that used to line the road at this point. If you go here www.beckenhamhistory.co.uk/gallery.html and select Clock House you will note what was there before the bomb. This was one of the worst V1 incidents in South London and, for the borough of Beckenham the worst single civilian incident of the war. Does anyone know Richard Beckett who in 1944 at the age of nine was living his parents and sisters at 14 Blandford Road and gave his account of what happened on this site www.flyingbombsandrockets.com/richardbeckett.html I am doing research for a book and would like to include this topic. Thanks.

See Chapter 9 in Beckenham: The Home Front 1939-45 which is a piece I wrote following an interview with my late mother on that very subject as she was bombed out of No. 1 Churchfields Road by the blast.
