I don't know whether anyone here remembers Winston Churchill visiting Penge in the early 1940's. I was 7/8 at the time. Everyone lined the street, either side, cheering, as he road down towards Penge centre in a black open car giving everyone the V salute.
During this period I also remember being marched down from School in Padua Rd. to a School in Maple Road [can't rmember the name] - for school dinners. Where everyone almost put up their hands for "seconds". Anyone remember school dinners during the war period?
