Hello, i,ve long been aware that my birth place was Stone park maternity but i know absolutely nothing about the place as i was shipped about from pillar to post and am now settled in Wirral. Is the hospital still there? I was born there in 1970, i know nothing about Beckenham except walks in a park, a paddling pool (i presume it was), and it always being lovely and sunny. Living in the Northwest of England you tend to miss hot weather and sunshine! Just kidding! All i really would like to know about is the hospital, it seems to be important to know where i am from now.

The Hospital replaced the Beckenham and Penge Maternity Home and was built in 1939 and closed in 1986. The site is now a sheltered complex owned by Morley College.

Hi Wendy, just in case you don't know where the Hospital was; it's on Stone Park Avenue near the junction of Village Way, and now called Ralph Perring Court.... it's all clearly visible on Google Maps. At a guess, the park you used to walk in was called Kelsey Park, with an entrance just a bit further along Stone Park Avenue. It was a really nice place from memory, and it has a lake - I'm not sure if there was a paddling pool, but someone else may be able to help there. As for missing the sun - I too am stuck "oop north" , right opposite you on the chilly east Lincolnshire coast! Hope that helps a bit anyway, there are plenty of people on here who will tell you anything you need to know about Beckenham. Hi Wendy, I wonder if this will reach you. My mum was a midwife at Stone Park from approx 1968-75. She worked nights, Mon-Weds, and loved it. She said it had a very special feel because it was so small and all the staff and patients were so nice. I can remember going with her to see new-born babies.
We lived in Sydenham, close to Penge East Station, and often used to meet mums with babies she’d delivered when we were out shopping. Our local park had a big paddling pool - I wonder if that’s the one you remember? It used to be called Alexandra Park but is now known as Alexandra Recreation Ground. If you google that, followed by “SE26” you can still see the paddling pool on satellite view.

In answer to Fifi :- Thank you for responding to my original question. I wonder if your Mum aided in my birth? The park you mention (Alexandra) is probably the one i i can vaguely remember as my parents were living in a house in Venner (Venor?) Rd in Sydenham in 1970.Thank you once again for your insight.

It was a lovely place to have a first baby with all the staff being so kind and caring.
