Hi, The Abbey is The Abbey School, it had an enviable reputation of getting pupils into public schools and the Royal Navy, the grounds were on 16 acres of land on an old gravel pit in Copers Cope Farm. It was founded in 1866. There are some images of the school on the site, if you go here www.beckenhamhistory.co.uk/flashNifties/gallery1.html and then select B, Junction-Southend Rd there are a couple of images of the school. There was a riding school attached to the Abbey. The gate posts to the school are still there today on the corner of Brackley Rd and Southend Rd..

Hello Historian. I was interested to hear about the Abbey School, my father was a pupil there in his early days before going on to Dulwich College. I have the school photographs from 1926 and 1929 which I would like to pass on to anyone interested. If you know of anyone, I would be pleased to hear. Thanks, Simon Adams adamssusi@tiscali.co.uk

There used to be Stumps Hill Riding Stables at the bottom of the garden of a big house facing Southend road. This was in 1950-60s. It was run by Jill Platts, she was a pupil at Sydenham High School. She used to lived in a large house in Venner road and rode the horses home sometimes, cantering through the alleyway by Alexandra Park from Trewsbury road to Tannsfeld road. There were several ponies one I remember was called Wight 'WIGET' as he had a mark like the Isle of White on his side. The stables were pretty make shift and the rides were taken along the unmade roads, such as Copers Cope in those days before they were tarmached. We also use to ride through the gates of Beckenham Place Park to the fork when the ride would gather together and canter along the unmade road to the gate of Summerhouse Hill wood at the back of Beckenham Place park, that was thrilling and I nearly fell off! At that time there was a Gymkhana held in the Beckenham Convent Field which was next to the unmade road. Happy horsey days! It took me 3 weeks to save up my 2/6 pocket money for a ride costing 7/6d, I had no sweets as I preferred the riding!
