During this period I also remember being marched down from School in Padua Rd. to a School in Maple Road [can't rmember the name] - for school dinners. Where everyone almost put up their hands for "seconds". Anyone remember school dinners during the war period?

I don't know whether anyone here remembers Winston Churchill visiting Penge in the early 1940's. I was 7/8 at the time. Everyone lined the street, either side, cheering, as he road down towards Penge centre in a black open car giving everyone the V salute.

Found the first post rather nostalgic. Just thought I would drop a comment here.
I too remember seeing doodlebugs flying over the rooftops; collecting shrapnel with my brother - our milkman was killed by shrapnel (so sad) - also sitting in the school and drinking our milk behind sandbags. And yes the 6d Saturday morning Cinema Club at the Odeon, etc.
All those; and some other memories of school during the war-time.
Sorry regret Alfred Fry doesn't ring a bell.

Thanks for that info. Chris. Evidently my sister had got the name wrong. Grateful for your reply and will let her have a copy perhaps when I speak to her next. Paduard.

My sister mentioned to me recently that there was a Bruno Paloni in her class at school [whose parents owned the Button Factory] situated as far as we know in Maple Road just opposite Chalin Street where she was born, just prior to moving to Jasmine Grove.
Subsequently there was talk of a fire occurring - does anyone remember the details of this establishment, location etc. and whether our memories are correct.?

I know we are in 2013 now - and Palace are in the Premiership. Just to record it on here, as I come from Anerley, that I am a supporter of Palace and glad to be so.

I remember purchasing my first suit from the 50 Bob Tailors in Penge. Couldn't afford Burtons at that time.
They were placed taking a direct diagonal across from the old Police Station in Penge High Street - to a store on the corner of Croydon Road.
A cousin of mine did the same some time after - insisting he had one off the tailor dummy in the window - to the much amusement of my Mother & Father.
Wonder if anyone else remembers that establishment?

Does anyone recall the tap dancing classes held over the Co-op building (just off Penge high Street). Didn't go there myself but my sister did - but not for long. Would have been in the fifties.

Does anyone remember the days when you could visit Woolworths, and (if I recall rightly)at the back right hand side there was a tea bar where you could sit on a stool and have a cuppa?

I remember going to the Royston Ballroom [period 1951-52]; also going to dancing lessons nearby [off Avenue Rd, possibly in Percy Rd]. Interesting because one graduated so to speak from the lessons to the Royston itself. Lessons run by a couple, man had 1 arm only presumably lost it in the war, wonder if anyone here remembers this? and they gave medals etc. i.e bronze, silver and so on. Also vaguely recall getting a bus from Anerley to the Eden Park Hotel ballroom; went with a friend named Eric (lived on Oakgrove/or Chesam Rd. if I recall). Great days!

Interesting photos; thank you.
I was just over 2 years of age when the fire happened, and my father lifted me up to see the fire. It was dark and I remember the sight quite well - strange because many things during that period I have forgotten, but this memory has always been with me.
At that time we lived in Chalin Street (off Maple Road) Anerley, and shortly afterwards moved up the road to Jasmine Grove. My uncle lived in Beckenham [Bob Turner] - but as they have all passed away now I obviously cannot ask them anything more than what I have just told you.
Thank you for listening.
