I have often wondered how many clubs there have been in and around this area over the years. Beckenham had The Mistrel Club that became Tites, then Lautrecs then Langtrys and now The Bridge. Then at Clockhouse there was Harriets. I have been informed that there was a beatnik club in the late 50s early 60s. I am not sure if Penge ever had a club, I may be wrong. There was a couple in Sydenham, the names escape me now. Was there any in Anerley?
There were and still are many private clubs around but have not got a clue about them.

What about the Gino Washington and the Ram Jam Band at the Black Prince Bexley or the Daylite Inn Petts Wood, Orchid Purley, Croyden Suite, can't remember any in Penge unless you include Peggy Spencers ! My mate Tony Ghula and me used to be given money to learn how to dance at Peggy Spencers but never went, straight into the Odeon instead, what do expect from 14 year olds !

Historian.... Just by way of a query - wasn't The Mistral Club originally Beckenham Ballrooms? Unless, of course, the Ballrooms couldn't really be seen as a nightclub. Pete Beckenham had The Mistrel Club that became Tites, then Lautrecs then Langtrys and now The Bridge.

Yes it was. It has also been a furniture store and a musical instrument shop.

Does anyone remember if the Croyden Suite was located close to West Croydon Stn. [in 1950's]? Or am I mixing it up with another name.

The Top Rank Croydon Suite was near West Croydon Station.

Thank you very much indeed for that Historian. I think it was the 'top rank' bit that I had forgotten. Used it for going dancing 1952/3. Again grateful for your reply.

This may be an odd question to ask, but thought I would put it here. That is do you know [my memory fails me] if travelling by rail in the early 50's, the single ticket would be half the price of a return ticket.?
The reason is because I could not make it out that when I went to that top rank I usually travelled by train from London to Anerley, met my friend Tony who lived in Risdale Road, whereupon we got the trolley bus to West Croydon Stn. When leaving I walked up to East Croydon Stn. and went back to the smoke from there. It just puzzles me.

In addition to my last post above, I was interested somewhat later to ‘recall’ that my friend Tony (who accompanied me during that particular visit to the dance hall), was to reveal to me some few years on that he had actually met his then future wife at that dance and that they were now married and lived in Penge [in flats near Penge West Stn). I now remember very clearly what happened at the time. It is funny sometimes how old memories return suddenly; although I hope this doesn’t bore you!
It was fairly commonplace, as those older ones here will remember, that - when going over to ask someone for a dance – to wait until the lights dimmed enough and then go over as quickly as possible – trusting that you didn’t get an embarrassing refusal (which sometimes happened). Tony said to me that he fancied a ‘tall’ girl sitting with a friend of hers, and we agreed that we both nipped over the dance area, and that I ask her companion at the same instant. We both got a dance and then returned to the drinks area to chew things over with the usual boy-chat.
So, as I have already indicated – Tony got and married his girl. Nothing much happened in my direction except I met and danced with a girl I knew quite well and had already met several times before in Penge/Anerley; she lived in Anerley - at the end of oakgrove road; and worked in Penge High Street - [Woolworths].
Any more “flash-backs” and I will post.

A flashback - Woolworth girl was 'pam'. Regret no flashback on surname. paduard

You might find a loose connection between this and the subject Lost & Found in the general section. paduard

Unfortunately in my day there were many Pam's/or Pamela's - quite a common name.

Maybe not so many as I had thought; for in the early days population was much smaller and sometimes it was said that everyone knew everyone. Cannot say of that today. Sad perhaps in a certain way of looking at things.
